This ruleset is used for training and demonstrations in Egdehirden’s Eastern Style combat. The focus is on historically inspired, safe, and controlled sparring, suitable for both beginners and experienced fighters.
🛡️ Required Protection
All participants must wear:
- Padded gloves
- Groin protection
- Helmet
- Forearm protection
- Elbow protection
Recommended:
- Knee and shin protection
- Throat padding
- Padded jacket/gambeson
⚔️ Cutting Weapons

Includes: Sword, axe, Dane axe
Valid target zones:
- Above the knee
- Above the wrist
- Torso up to the collarbone
Head strikes:
- Allowed only from above
- Must come at a maximum of 45° downward angle
- No strikes from the side or below
Back/butt/head (rear):
- Can be tapped lightly to indicate a hit
- No forceful strikes — a pat is enough
⚔️ Thrusting Weapons

Includes: One-handed and Two-handed spear
Valid target zones:
- Above the knee
- Torso up to the chest line
Head strikes:
- Not allowed
- Thrusts must not target the neck or head
Handling rules:
- Two-handed spears must always be used with both hands
- Grip must be overgrip (knuckles up, no reverse or underhand grips)
- No sliding thrusts (no extending one hand forward to “poke”)
- No overhand thrusts (no javelin-style, downward stabs from above)
🚫 Weapon Use Restrictions
No sliding thrusts:
- You may not slide one hand forward along the shaft to extend reach during a thrust (“pool cue” motion is forbidden).
- Hands must remain in fixed position during the motion.
No overhand thrusts:
- Thrusts from above the shoulder or head (like a javelin throw) are not allowed.
- All thrusts must come from waist or chest level, and in a linear motion.
No forceful strikes to the back:
- Back, buttocks, and back of the head are not valid targets for full strikes
- A light touch or pat is sufficient to indicate a hit in these areas
- Any forceful attack to these zones is strictly prohibited
✅ General Conduct
- All hits must be controlled and intentional – no excessive force
- No grappling, punching, or grabbing
- Stop immediately on “HOLD” or injury signal
- Be aware of your surroundings and maintain respect for your opponent at all times
